AVID Program

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges.   At Washington Manor, AVID practices are being implemented across the curriculum, in all classes, as teachers and administrators get trained and experienced.  In addition, WMMS offers a specific elective for seventh and eighth grades that uses AVID techniques intensively to focus on capable students in the academic middle. The formula is simple – raise expectations of students and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to the challenge.

Today, AVID has been adopted by nearly 4,500 schools in 47 states, the District of Columbia and 16 countries or territories, and serves approximately 400,000 students. Schools and districts have taken methodologies and strategies from the elective course and implemented them schoolwide and districtwide to impact their entire communities and create articulated programs for college success.

The application process for students at WMMS wishing to enroll in the AVID elective for next school year (2017-2018) officially begins in February 2017.   Students are selected based on recommendations from teachers, indicated interest, and fitness for the AVID class.  Student and parent informational sessions will be held in February. Interested students must complete a written application and formal interview before being invited to join next year's elective.
